- Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Prescription
drug abuse comprises almost one-third of drug abuse in the United States,
now the fourth most abused drugs behind only marijuana, alcohol and
tobacco. Misuse, abuse, and illegal sale of prescriptions drugs are
a threat to patient and public safety in Montana. A stakeholder group
has been convened by the Montana Board of Pharmacy and Montana Board
of Crime Control to study the issue in our state.

- Jail Overcrowding - Offender Management
Montana’s jails, detention facilities and prisons continue to
operate at or beyond capacity. Local law enforcement and other criminal
justice system stakeholders have asked MBCC to facilitate the state’s
strategic response to overcrowding. After detailed consideration of
the issue, MBCC decided to develop a repository to collect data from
the state’s jails. This data is critical to gaining insight and
hopefully an understanding of the jail overcrowding problem. We can
use this data to analyze what is causing the overcrowding of jails.
In essence, we will be able to know, in a broad sense, who is being
housed in county and local jails and why. This data will be used to
inform policy makers and help them decide how to deal with the issue.

- Crime Prevention
In October, 2007 the Board of Crime Control kicked off their statewide
crime prevention initiative with it’s first ever Montana Crime
Prevention Conference. The conference was held in Billings and was open
to anyone with an interest in public safety and crime prevention. The
conference was very successful with attendees from many law enforcement
agencies, community groups, citizens and school officials from all over
Montana. Feedback received was positive and we look forward to next
year’s event. One of the major goals of the Montana Crime Prevention
Conference was to establish a steering committee to develop and implement
a statewide crime prevention coalition. During the conference a 17 member
committee was formed and they are forging ahead with great progress.
The committee is currently working on the coalition’s vision statement,
mission statement, guiding principles and By-laws.
- Tribal Lands Crime Data Collection
In the spring of 2005, the Montana Board of Crime Control’s
Statistical Analysis Center set out to collect crime statistics on tribal
lands in the Northwest, Region 5. Through a cooperative partnership
with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Justice Statistics,
and Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies, the Board of Crime Control collected
tribal crime data over a three year period (2004-2006).
